part 3: hilton head, south carolina

Friday, May 3, 2013

For the last stretch of our trip, we made our way to Hilton Head, South Carolina.  Using the hotel points Ian's earned we scored a couple nights at a resort right on the beach.  These couple of days were where the majority of the rejuvenation and relaxation settled in.

I dont think this getaway could've been any better.  I think I'll always remember our final trip away before we officially expanded our small family.

part 2: downtown savannah

Friday, May 3, 2013

We are absolutely smitten by downtown Savannah.  Ian and I have a lot of conversations as we walk around our neighborhood in downtown Lexington about what we could add to it to make it more cohesive and pedestrian friendly.  Walking around downtown Savannah was as if one of our conversations hatched and became a city.  Every few blocks there are squares of cobblestone, benches and beautiful old trees.  The gorgeous historic buildings are being utilized for new and unique purposes.  As we walked around on a Friday evening after we'd finished eating at Lady and Son's (Paula Deen's restaurant.  YUM.)  We were amazed at how many events and activities were going on for everyone to enjoy.  There were two live concerts, a film being shown in one of the parks and plenty to do and see. The next day we explored some more, mostly walking around the neighborhoods surrounding downtown to see the great old houses.  Breathtaking.  Well done Savannah.  We can't wait to go back and find out more.

With only a few more weeks left of my job, we decided to use some of my accrued vacation pay and take a long weekend to get away.  It ended up being the perfect balm for our currently busy schedules.   Especially as we realized that Ian and I hadn't taken a vacation with just the two of us since our honeymoon.  It was a perfect balance of recreation, relaxation and good food.  Even now, almost a week later-- I am feeling grateful and refreshed from our little trip away.  I highly recommend long weekends to new places if you find the chance!

Part I: Tybee Island and Fort Pulaski near Savannah, Georgia.

Fort Pulaski, just a little ways up from Tybee Island was a neat diversion and really beautiful.

We'll stay in this place for as long as we can.  But if we're being honest, this place isn't exactly ideal for a growing family.

We love it though.  Knowing I wont be here forever, I've found myself taking mental pictures of the place.  What it feels like, what it looks like and the details.

apartment interior: per request

Thursday, March 28, 2013

My sister Mica posted about her trip to come see us last year.  She showed our house but was missing pictures of the interior.  This is me complying with her request.  I've learnt that I'm lousy at photo-journalism.  Seeing her pictures of our Lexington and our home made me realize how much I've failed to document!  I don't have any regrets necessarily--this year has been about teaching preschool and being pregnant.  I am feeling just fine about that.  Blogging took a hit, yes.  But who knows?  Maybe this little space will become more regular when my time is a little more flexible.  We'll see.

Alright!  So back to the reason I'm posting:

According to the owner, this house was built in 1871.  It was split into four apartments during the First World War, we think.  Our space is about 630 square feet.  It's small, but the twelve foot ceilings in our living room, tall doorways and eight foot ceilings in our bedroom/kitchen make it feel less so.  We love this place.
